Mobile QA market update — 5–12 October 2026
2026-10-12
A big week for QA and dev teams: the first foldable iPhone opens for pre-order, Android changes background behaviour even for existing apps, and Apple adds regional privacy requirements in Europe.
iPhone Duo: pre-orders open October 16
Apple's first foldable iPhone opens for pre-order on October 16; first markets ship October 23. Model A3447, 7.6" inner foldable screen, 5.4" cover screen, 256GB–2TB, iOS 27.1 out of the box, dual eSIM only (no physical SIM), from $1,999 in the US.
A new test category: switching between screens, orientation changes, keeping state while folding, multitasking, Touch ID, the inner camera, eSIM and layouts for a folding screen. Check specs against Apple's official page — some Israeli listings wrongly show nano-SIM support.
Android 17 QPR2 Beta 7 changes how apps run in the background
Released October 9 (build CP41.260831.016). Self-broadcasts no longer keep the process alive: if the app is cached or frozen the event may be delayed, and if the process dies first it can be lost. Applies to all apps regardless of targetSdkVersion. Also fixes HTTPS downloads via DownloadManager, idle battery drain and a deep-sleep issue.
Re-test apps that use broadcasts for background work, keep-alive, sync or timers, and move them to WorkManager, AlarmManager or in-process calls where needed.
iOS 27.2 adds regional privacy requirements in Europe
iOS 27.2 beta 3 (build 24B5099f) changes App Tracking Transparency: in France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Romania an expanded prompt is shown, and consent can be requested again once a year.
For gaming, ad-tech, commerce and subscription apps, testing on a device set to Israel or the US isn't enough — test consent, attribution, purchases, storefront, language and region separately in each market.
Galaxy Tab S12 arrives in Israel
Galaxy Tab S12+ and Tab S12 Ultra are now on sale in Israel with Android 17 and One UI 9, in Wi-Fi and 5G versions, from about ₪3,979 to ₪7,099 depending on model, connectivity and storage.
For QA, the Tab S12+ 5G 256GB is usually the one to get: tablet apps, DeX, multitasking, eSIM, multi-window and enterprise flows on Android 17 — no special import. Foreign versions still matter for a different CSC, a foreign carrier or a storage size not sold here.
A cloud device isn't always a substitute for a real one
BrowserStack and Sauce Labs have added iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max to their device clouds — great for automation and broad compatibility testing, but not every real-world scenario.
Physical hardware is still needed for: SIM and eSIM on an Israeli network, devices held on specific OS versions, Bluetooth, NFC, camera and microphone, MDM and device binding, battery and thermal behaviour, on-site testing in a secure environment, and regional, carrier-locked or hard-to-find models.
This week's focus for QA teams
1. Prepare an iPhone Duo test plan before the device arrives. 2. Test Android apps that rely on background broadcasts on QPR2 Beta 7. 3. Review ATT, subscription and attribution flows per EU country on iOS 27.2.
